Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most — about our ingredients, how to use them, and how MirenSkin works. Every formula we make is vegan, and the complete ingredient list is published on each product page. This page is general information, not medical advice; for anything specific to your health, check with a professional.

About MirenSkin

Is MirenSkin vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes. Every MirenSkin product is 100% vegan and cruelty-free — no animal-derived ingredients and no animal testing. We formulate to EU cosmetic standards, which restrict over 1,300 ingredients.

Does MirenSkin list all its ingredients?

Yes — we publish the full INCI (ingredient) list on every product page, with no "proprietary blend" hiding. You can also read our plain-language guide on the Ingredients page.

Where does MirenSkin ship from?

We ship from the United States. See our shipping policy for delivery times and rates to your location.

Are there fragrance-free options for sensitive skin?

Yes. Where skin tends to be reactive, we go fragrance-free — for example, our Barrier Replenishing Cream. Always patch-test a new product if your skin is sensitive.

Bakuchiol & anti-aging

What is bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is a plant compound from the babchi seed, studied as a gentle alternative to retinol. It supports smoother-looking texture and a softer appearance of fine lines — without the dryness, flaking, or sun sensitivity retinol is known for. It's the hero of our Natural Retinol Alternative Oil Serum.

Is bakuchiol safe during pregnancy?

We don't recommend assuming it is — please check with your doctor or midwife first. Although bakuchiol is often marketed as a "pregnancy-safe" retinol alternative because it isn't a vitamin A derivative, it hasn't been well studied in pregnancy, and "not proven harmful" is not the same as "proven safe." When in doubt, ask your healthcare provider before using any active ingredient.

Is bakuchiol as good as retinol?

In comparative studies, bakuchiol users reported improvements in the look of fine lines and tone comparable to retinol — with significantly less irritation. It's an especially strong choice for sensitive skin or anyone who couldn't tolerate retinol. We compare them in detail in Bakuchiol vs. Retinol.

Does bakuchiol cause purging?

For most people, no. Unlike retinol, bakuchiol isn't associated with a "purge" phase of breakouts and flaking, which is a big reason people find it easier to stick with. Introduce any new product gradually and patch-test first.

Can you use bakuchiol with retinol?

Yes. Some people alternate nights or use bakuchiol on "off nights" to keep results going while giving skin a break from retinol. If you're happy with bakuchiol alone, there's no need to add retinol.

Skin barrier & sensitive skin

What is the skin barrier?

Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of skin — skin cells held together by lipids like ceramides, often pictured as bricks and mortar. When it's intact, skin holds moisture and keeps irritants out; when it's depleted, skin gets tight, dry, and reactive.

How do I know if my skin barrier is damaged?

Common signs: skin feels tight after cleansing, products that never bothered you suddenly sting, and you have persistent dryness, flaking, or redness that comes and goes. Our guide on repairing your skin barrier walks through the fix.

How long does it take to repair the skin barrier?

Most people notice less tightness and stinging within a few days of simplifying their routine, with fuller recovery over two to six weeks. Skin renews on roughly a monthly cycle, so consistency matters more than any single product.

Dry skin & hydration

What's the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?

Dry skin is a type that lacks oil; dehydrated skin is a temporary condition that lacks water — and anyone, even oily skin, can be dehydrated. Dry skin needs richer, lipid-based moisture; dehydrated skin needs water-binding humectants like hyaluronic acid. We break it down in Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin.

Can dry skin cause acne or breakouts?

Indirectly, yes. Dry or dehydrated skin can overproduce oil to compensate, and flaking can trap debris in pores — both of which can contribute to congestion. Keeping skin properly moisturized often helps.

Is niacinamide good for dry skin?

Yes — niacinamide supports the skin barrier and helps skin hold onto moisture, which benefits both dry and dehydrated skin. It's gentle and pairs well with hydrating ingredients.

What is urea cream and what does it do?

Urea is a humectant naturally found in skin's own moisturizing system. In a cream, it draws in water for deep, lasting hydration and gently softens rough, flaky patches on areas like heels, elbows, and shins. It anchors our Urea & Panthenol Body Cream; more in What Is Urea Cream?

Hair care & keratin

Do keratin shampoos actually work?

Yes, within limits. Keratin shampoos use hydrolyzed keratin — protein small enough to bind to damaged spots on the hair shaft — to smooth the cuticle, reduce frizz, add shine, and help hair resist breakage. They won't chemically "repair" hair, but they make damaged hair look and behave much healthier. More in this guide.

How do I repair damaged hair?

Hair can't heal itself, so "repair" means smoothing the cuticle, reinforcing weak spots with protein, and preventing further damage. Use a weekly keratin mask, balance protein with moisture, cut heat, and handle wet hair gently. Full routine in How to Repair Damaged Hair.

How do I stop hair breakage?

Most breakage is mechanical, so reduce heat styling, handle wet hair gently, use a leave-in to cut friction while brushing, and keep the cuticle reinforced with protein. How you treat your hair matters as much as what you put on it.

Can you use too much keratin or protein on hair?

Yes — too much protein can leave hair feeling stiff or straw-like. If that happens, alternate with a protein-free wash for a week or two. For most people with damaged hair, though, regular protein is exactly what's missing.
